Floor Coatings

Newly laid and existing concrete floors require both protection and sealing. Decorative floor coatings are designed for use on a range of concrete substrates regardless of size or the floors ultimate purpose. Over the years, Johns of Nottingham have completed numerous projects from the smallest of domestic floors to large commercial areas in excess of 25,000m2.

Preparation is key prior to applying the chosen coatings, if this is not done right, the results will not show a true reflection of the products capabilities. Preparation can be described as:

- Remove all oil spots & degrease the full area.

- Initially etching with a mild acid then followed by a scrub, vacuum & rinse down enables us to see the true condition of the base.

- Following a visual review of the base. We fill all cracks & imperfections with a specialist epoxy crack filler.

Analysis of existing damp readings along with the current air temperature & concrete base temperature are crucial factors in preparing the floor. Without optimum conditions, the floor will not dry or cure correctly. Application of the products can be fairly simple often using a brush & roller, we find the optimum finish is achieved in this manner. To reiterate however, preparation of the base cannot be understated.

Johns of Nottingham are an accredited 'RIW Specialist Applicator' this means we can install products throughout their range. In our experience, RIW products deliver excellent results. 'RIW Toughseal' is a product often selected by our commercial clients. The manufacturer describes the benefits of ‘Toughseal’ below:

"Toughseal is typically used to provide a barrier to water and water vapour, as a surface applied membrane. It is used in areas that require excellent tensile adhesion, chemical and/or abrasion resistance; such as plant rooms and under raised access floors, etc. Toughseal has a Class 1 fire rating and is U.V. Resistant.
